SUSTAINABLE PEARL EDUCATION
Cultivating Inspiration for Planet Stewardship
Pearls appear in art, history, religion, marine biology, chemistry, economy, marine conservation, ecosystem, and much more! This revelation inspires us to use a multidisciplinary approach to practically reflect the beauty and complexity of sustainable development in our seminars and courses.
The pearl is the starting point to all of our lessons. We use Hong Kong's histories of pearl industry to reconnect students with our cultural heritage. We show the origins of pearls to demonstrate the possibilities of human-nature collaboration. Students witness the restorative power of pearl cultivation by witnessing artificial reefs at work. From there, we explore how to maximize the value of the shell, the pearl, and the meat.
In summary, our education covers four areas: Humanities, STEM, Ecosystem, and Sustainable Development.
Humanities
Learn the history, culture and art of pearls
STEM
Discover what sciences have unveiled about pearls
Ecosystem
Understand the fragility and power of nature
Sustainability
Explore what it means to be part of the ecosystem
Pearls, the gateway to witness sustainability
SUSTAINABLE PEARLS
When humans and nature work together
While pearls offer the economic benefits, the cultivation plays an important roles in marine restoration and sustainable development. Pearl oysters filter 200L per day, act as a reef and promotes biodiversity. This finding transformed into a campaign called "Sustainable Pearls" in 2014.
Now, seawater pearl cultivators are putting their efforts into promoting the pearls' stories and revealing the hidden secrets behind the natural gemstones. Furthermore, Pearl Professor summarizes the efforts in Sustainable Pearls into 3Rs [Rethink, Restore, Reproduce] and embeds the 3Rs during the lessons.
The 3Rs to Sustainable Pearls
SEA TO LAND
Learn Sustainable Pearls Indoor and Outdoor
Everyone can find pearls in their best forms at the jewelry stores, but very rare that people would get to see pearls at the source. However, Hong Kong is a special metropolis that has a clean marine ecosystem that supports pearl cultivation. Furthermore, the well-developed roads enable anyone to go from the city centre to the nearest pearl farm. The pearl farm, situated at Saikung, is designed to be an education centre at the sea to demonstrate pearl farming and share sustainable development.
As the pearl farm aims for an experience-oriented tour, there is a limit to the depth of where we can explore. Thus, we also offer seminars and courses to schools from primary schools to universities.
Seminar
A 1.5-hour interactive seminar that aims to engage participants with practical cases in sustainable development based on our experiences in the cultured pearl industry
Course
Develop a global perspective and interdisciplinary understanding of the art and sciences of sustainable development via the studies of the cultured pearl industry.
Beyond HK
Travel beyond the borders to learn and experience how pearl farms from other countries grow pearls while engaging in sustainable development.
